INFO: WHAT MAKES DISCRETE MATHEMATICS DIFFERENT?

Mathematics is the foundation of all sciences. Mathematics is always considered to be one of the most important course in all programme of studies in sciences, engineering and information technology.

What is mathematics? until now mathematician still argue what is the ultimate definition of mathematics. You might refer to the books of philosophy of mathematics to dig more about it.

Although mathematicians have different opinion on what should mathematics define, but they are mostly agreed that the role of mathematics is that :

"mathematics is a tool for modeling real world phenomena"

 As far modeling is concern, mathematics can be divided into two types:

• Continuous Mathematics that deals with modeling of continuous phenomenon, foe example modeling of flow of water, the area for surface, the volume of solid ..etc.
• Discrete Mathematics that deal with modeling of discrete phenomenon, for example counting the number of available option, logic.

In digital electronics, data and information is represented by using discrete representation. therefore Discrete Mathematics is important and relevant in IT and due to nature of processing data such Programming and Data Structure. 

OFFICIAL VISIT TO UTHM, JOHORE

The last 25th May 2012, My fellow colleague and I went to a visit to UTHM located at Parit Raja, Johore. For your information, UTHM has a great relation with Malaysian Polytechnics since the establishment of PLSP (Pusat Latihan Staf Politeknik) on a perviously known deserted campus of Politeknik Batu Pahat. Time by time this institute has grown rapidly and become now day Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia. The campus has expanded to a larger campus suite for a University. 

As an alumnus, I was intrigue to visit and recall all the old memories of my undergraduate study. Main purpose of this visit is to discuss a problems face by the Polytechnic Graduate whose now pursue their degree in engineering or technology, specifically the noticeable under performance in Mathematics. UTHM lecturer aware that polytechnic graduate are less competent compare to Matriculation and STPM entry students. A dialogue between JMSK and FSTHD Lecturers ware held to conveys this problems and seeking the solution action for both as pre and post act. A resolution has made and agreed that Polytechnic has to enhance the teaching of Mathematics interm of instructional and syllabus content revision. UTHM lecturer also share that there is 4 factor affecting Polytechnic students: 

1. Self Attitude - late to class, skip class.
2. Study strategy - no proper study strategy, spoon fed 
3. Personality - lack communication in class- passive 
4. Identity crisis - no aims, no determination.

INFO : BB101 ENGINEERING SCIENCE REFERENCE BOOK REVIEW

Seeking a good reference book might be tricky unless someone recommended it to you, well.... for this post I would like to make a brief review on " 1st Edition Engineering Science for Polytechnics", write by Siti Morni Ab Rahman and friends. The book was the first trial for BB101, compliance with the new syllabus. This book is a publication of Math, Science and Computer Department Port Dickson Polytechnic. Generally, I thinks this book are good and can be a great main reference much likely a text book. Every Chapter has simple note but nothing is missing there. Examples are abundance and so with the exercises. This book also got a simulation test to gauge student level of understanding. Unfortunately, some question is incorrect ans so do the answers given. Nonetheless, this book is a great help for student to guide their study.

both books are very good, infact the second one is the best book ever I read but currently I'm using the Schaum's Outline as my primary reference. You can get one for you at Kinokuniya book store.
