INFO: WHAT MAKES DISCRETE MATHEMATICS DIFFERENT?


Mathematics is the foundation of all sciences. Mathematics is always considered to be one of the most important course in all programme of studies in sciences, engineering and information technology.

What is mathematics? until now mathematician still argue what is the ultimate definition of mathematics. You might refer to the books of philosophy of mathematics to dig more about it.

Although mathematicians have different opinion on what should mathematics define, but they are mostly agreed that the role of mathematics is that :

"mathematics is a tool for modeling real world phenomena"

 As far modeling is concern, mathematics can be divided into two types:


  • Continuous Mathematics that deals with modeling of continuous phenomenon, foe example modeling of flow of water, the area for surface, the volume of solid ..etc.
  • Discrete Mathematics that deal with modeling of discrete phenomenon, for example counting the number of available option, logic.
In digital electronics, data and information is represented by using discrete representation. therefore Discrete Mathematics is important and relevant in IT and due to nature of processing data such Programming and Data Structure.
