BA202: UPDATE FOR DISCRETE MATHEMATICS NOTES

Dear BA202 student,

As I mention earlier in class, we got a few adjustment on our course, therefore some of the old chapter is phased out or discontinued while some is revised to smaller chapter. Chapter 2 also has been updated especially on the topic of Graph of Function. All the update can be see here. Thanks.

INFO: NEW STUDENTS COMING AND NEW SYLLABUS FOR BA202 AND BC101 FOR JUN 2012

Semester break will end this week, next week new student will start attending classes. Almost 600 junior student enroll this semester, a big number but not as big than years before. Now their happy attending the orientation weeks which ends this Wednesday. On this Wednesday too, senior students will come to attend the course registration along with their juniors. A New syllabus also has been release with some improvement. So, for incoming semester there will be a tweaks on the contents and assessment. Happy to know that the new SLT for BA202 is reduce to coherent with the credit hours. I will update the page for BA202 and create a new page for BC101 soon. I will inform the update here after the update done.

INFO: OBE IN ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS COURSE

On 3rd and 4th of July 2012, a course about implementation of OBE (Outcome Based Education) in Engineering Mathematics is held with cooperation between PKT and PSMZA. Experience instructors from UniMAP are invited to conduct the 2 days course which held here in PSMZA. Now days, OBE not only should be understand by lecturers, students also have to understand what is OBE are about. OBE is an education model emphasis on outcome of the teaching and more to student oriented. Student is encourage to be more independent while lecturers will be the facilitators. There are 9 domains or area of outcome based education (learning domain):

INFO: WHAT MAKES DISCRETE MATHEMATICS DIFFERENT?

Mathematics is the foundation of all sciences. Mathematics is always considered to be one of the most important course in all programme of studies in sciences, engineering and information technology.

What is mathematics? until now mathematician still argue what is the ultimate definition of mathematics. You might refer to the books of philosophy of mathematics to dig more about it.

Although mathematicians have different opinion on what should mathematics define, but they are mostly agreed that the role of mathematics is that :

"mathematics is a tool for modeling real world phenomena"

 As far modeling is concern, mathematics can be divided into two types:

• Continuous Mathematics that deals with modeling of continuous phenomenon, foe example modeling of flow of water, the area for surface, the volume of solid ..etc.
• Discrete Mathematics that deal with modeling of discrete phenomenon, for example counting the number of available option, logic.

In digital electronics, data and information is represented by using discrete representation. therefore Discrete Mathematics is important and relevant in IT and due to nature of processing data such Programming and Data Structure. 

OFFICIAL VISIT TO UTHM, JOHORE

The last 25th May 2012, My fellow colleague and I went to a visit to UTHM located at Parit Raja, Johore. For your information, UTHM has a great relation with Malaysian Polytechnics since the establishment of PLSP (Pusat Latihan Staf Politeknik) on a perviously known deserted campus of Politeknik Batu Pahat. Time by time this institute has grown rapidly and become now day Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia. The campus has expanded to a larger campus suite for a University. 

As an alumnus, I was intrigue to visit and recall all the old memories of my undergraduate study. Main purpose of this visit is to discuss a problems face by the Polytechnic Graduate whose now pursue their degree in engineering or technology, specifically the noticeable under performance in Mathematics. UTHM lecturer aware that polytechnic graduate are less competent compare to Matriculation and STPM entry students. A dialogue between JMSK and FSTHD Lecturers ware held to conveys this problems and seeking the solution action for both as pre and post act. A resolution has made and agreed that Polytechnic has to enhance the teaching of Mathematics interm of instructional and syllabus content revision. UTHM lecturer also share that there is 4 factor affecting Polytechnic students: 

1. Self Attitude - late to class, skip class.
2. Study strategy - no proper study strategy, spoon fed 
3. Personality - lack communication in class- passive 
4. Identity crisis - no aims, no determination.

INFO : BB101 ENGINEERING SCIENCE REFERENCE BOOK REVIEW

Seeking a good reference book might be tricky unless someone recommended it to you, well.... for this post I would like to make a brief review on " 1st Edition Engineering Science for Polytechnics", write by Siti Morni Ab Rahman and friends. The book was the first trial for BB101, compliance with the new syllabus. This book is a publication of Math, Science and Computer Department Port Dickson Polytechnic. Generally, I thinks this book are good and can be a great main reference much likely a text book. Every Chapter has simple note but nothing is missing there. Examples are abundance and so with the exercises. This book also got a simulation test to gauge student level of understanding. Unfortunately, some question is incorrect ans so do the answers given. Nonetheless, this book is a great help for student to guide their study.

both books are very good, infact the second one is the best book ever I read but currently I'm using the Schaum's Outline as my primary reference. You can get one for you at Kinokuniya book store.
